Jenny Fletcher Starts Season Strong

Jenny Fletcher, a newly-inked Suunto sponsored athlete, has begun her Triathlon season with a bang. Below is her version of the past two races.

From Jenny Fletcher: I have completed two races this year. Two very opposite races. My first ever ITU race in Mazatlan a couple weeks ago which was such a great experience... Race ready? Maybe not quite yet, but it brought a hunger that has driven me forward into my training and fueled my drive for the race I just completed this weekend. I just competed in the Nautica South Beach Triathlon. I am so thrilled with how this race went... from my focus, to how it felt, and for this new level of drive I've never had before. The power I felt in all three events and the fitness level was a new high for me. My bike average was 23mph, and my run average was a 6:06min/mile and I felt that I had just touched the beginning of a new era of training. I was able to cross that finish line with a smile and not really be concerned with the overall result. Just knowing I am at a place I have never been before had me so excited. I stood on that podium in second place smiling knowing I've trained hard and raced hard to achieve this! My 40 days of training in Australia with some of the best in this sport brought me to a new level. I owe everyone that was there my thanks, and to Siri Lindley my new inspiring and incredible coach... you and I both know the best is yet to come. To EVERYONE... THANK YOU as always... for supporting me and believing in me!

Jenny's next competition is this weekend where she is involved in the Dow Live Earth Run For Water. She will participate with thousands of others in Los Angeles to help raise awareness for the world's current water crisis. Then on April 22nd, Jenny is back in Florida for the St. Anthony's Triathlon and on May 2nd she will be back in California competing in her second (and favorite race) Escape from Alcatraz.
We're looking forward to a memorable season. Keep up the great work Jenny!

News is what's different

No News: Conrad Stoltz wins the XTERRA in Richmond, VA last weekend.

No News: Andy Potts wins the Escape from Alcatraz.

No News: Jenny Fletcher wins her Age group at the Escape from Alcatraz.

News: 3 minutes before the XTERRA race started, Conrad sliced open the top of his foot shuffling across the bottom of the James River while helping to put a course buoy back in place. This resulted in a HUGE flesh wound on his foot. After the race it got fixed with 7 stitches. But before that Conrad did race, got some first aid during the first transition, soaked his running shoe in blood and finished FIRST!

TRAIN SMARTER, RACE HARDER! Congrats Conrad, you are amazing!
Find the story in Conrad's own words here.

Congratulations Andy, three times is legacy!Andy put in a solid race and not only had the best swim leg as usual but also had the fastest run and the second fastest bike leg. But up the famous Sand Ladder Andy (07 in 50 sec) lost 1 minute to fellow Suunto athlete Jenny Fletcher (6 min 54 sec). We are investigating this fact and will share more insight soon!

Jenny won her age group in 2 hours 38 minutes which puts her also in the top rank of all non-pro female and Top 9 in the pro field. HEY USAT it's time for the pro card for Jenny! Check out Jenny's blog where she describes her life: "I'm having a blast on this journey!"

Rev3 Triathlon recap

Yes, Matty Reed did it again. It seems Suunto Ambassador Boom Boom is unstoppable in 2009. We are very proud to see Matty train and race in Suunto. See you at Alcatraz and for ITU in D.C.!
But this time we want to focus on another team of great Suunto Ambassadors. US Pro Tri, lead by Ryan Bates, is also training and racing in Suunto. and yes, they are very successfull, too. Check out their website
As emntioned, no-one can beat Matty this year so they're focusing on a top result. And it worked well.

Mike Caiazzo finished 9th, just missing the big prize purse. We agree that you deserve a prize money when finishing 9th!!!

Mike on the run

Ryan came in 11th and John Kenny finished 12th!

Ryan finishing 11th!

Congratulations to all of your from all here at Suunto USA. See you at Eagleman!

Our last comment: Always a good move to choose a race without Matty in case you want to win.

3rd Race 3rd Victory

The race in Shelby County, AL started with world class swimmer Craig Evans coming out of the water first for the fourth straight year here. But Suunto Athlete Conrad Stoltz caught him early in the Bike leg and entered the run with a big lead he never relinquished.
After the race and also in Memory of Steve Larsen, one of the best athletes and men this sport has ever seen, Conrad said: ”The technical parts are usually my strengths, but today I couldn’t focus. I did feel like I had amazing strength today though. This was a great victory for Steve.”

Nicolas Lebrun, Suunto Athlete from France, finished in 5th place.

Current ranking in the XTERRA Cup Series:

1 Conrad Stoltz 300 points
2 Josiah Middaugh 262

Making History in Europe

Check out this report by Suunto athlete Kit Karzen. Not only did Kit win USA Jr. National Track Championships in 2008. His reports are great reading. At this moment, he is racing a Track event in Europe.
This past weekend, Team USA embarked on a trip to the Apeldoorn Velodrome, where we competed at the Omnisport Interland Track Event. The Interland Race Series is a series that makes its way around Europe, hosting the worlds best for Junior track racing. This event hosted the Czech, Belgians, Scottish, British, Dutch, and none other than the USofA. My race schedule was pretty packed, with a Scratch, Points, Team Pursuit, and Madison on Day 1, and a Derny, Madison, and Elimination race on Day 2.

... All right, Day 1 was over. Took some time overnight to think about ways of winning these races. Form is great...I'm pumped. The American Juniors warmed up together, and prepared ourselves physically and mentally for the long day ahead. Over the two days, we spent 18 hrs in the Apeldoorn Velodrome. It takes a certain amount of thick skin and mental control to get through a day like that. I had three events for the day, the Derny Race, Elimination, and the Madison.

First up, the Derny. There were about six riders in my race. The Dernies wizzing around the track, expelling plenty of exhaust brought back good memories of racing these babies in Switzerland. I drew fifth position. Once the race began, my driver and I sped right to the front of the field. No playing catch up mid-way in this race...every second counts. With seven laps to go, I was leading, but started to feel the "black lung" effect, as I like to call it, begin. With four to go, a Dutch rider made a huge move. I was pretty cooked by the time I couldn't even think to react. I took 2nd. Almost a win, darn. Okay, next up...elimination. I'm feeling pooped still from the Derny. I knew my engine wasn't revived in time for the race, so I could only do so much without completely blowing my legs up before the Madison. I think I placed 8th or so. I used this as a nice spin and adrenaline pumper, mission accomplished!
NOW, the Madison (Don't know what a Madison is?). My partner, Danny Heeley. We've been riding together on and off for a year and a half now. Last year, we went to the Hasselt 3 day in Belgium, and didn't obtain any spectacular results. Here was our chance. About 8 other teams lined up, including those from Holland, Great Britain, and the Czech Republic. Many of the teams included those who were coming off of a very strong winter season of Madison racing. Long story short, the race kept together the whole race. It came down to the final 10 laps when all hell was breaking loose with attacks being initiated by just about everyone. With 4 to go, Danny swung me in for my last pull. I sprinted harder than I have in a while, and made a gap of a couple bike lengths off of a Czech and Dutch team that was trailing us. I threw in Danny with perfect timing at one to go. We held them off, and won the Madison.

Today, we made USA Cycling history as the first Junior American team to ever win an international Madison in Europe. Let's just say we heard from USA Cycling today that they are very, very pumped, and so are we!
